About Our Residential Interior Millwork Service
Millwork is what gives a house its sense of permanence. Wainscoting and raised or shaker panelling, picture-frame moulding, coffered and beamed ceilings, chair and picture rails, deep window casings, columns and stair details all change how a room is read long before furniture arrives.
The technical work is proportion. Panel heights are set against ceiling height and window sills, moulding profiles are scaled so they do not overpower a room, and rails and stiles are aligned with door heads and openings. We draw these relationships out before cutting, because millwork that is slightly out of proportion is noticeable even to people who cannot say why.
Material choice depends on the finish. Paint-grade poplar and MDF give crisp, seamless painted surfaces; white oak, walnut and maple are selected and grain-matched for stained and clear-finished work. In humid Michigan summers and dry heated winters, we allow for seasonal movement in the joinery so panels do not open at the seams.
Clients bring us in for whole-home millwork packages in new builds, for period-accurate restoration in older Dearborn, Grosse Pointe and Birmingham homes, and for single dramatic features such as a panelled dining room or a coffered study ceiling. In every case we match existing details where they matter and improve them where they do not.
Our Residential Interior Millwork Process
Four clear stages, from the first conversation to the final walkthrough — so you always know what happens next.
- Step 1
Consultation and survey
We visit the home, measure the rooms and record existing trim profiles and ceiling conditions. Reference photographs and any architectural drawings are gathered. We then discuss which details will have the most impact for your budget.
- Step 2
Design and shop drawings
Elevations are drawn showing panel layouts, moulding profiles and joint locations at full proportion. You approve these drawings before anything is milled. Mock-ups of a profile can be produced when a decision is close.
- Step 3
Milling and finishing
Stock is selected, milled to profile and pre-finished in controlled conditions wherever the schedule allows. Painted work is sprayed for a seamless surface; stained work is sampled on your actual timber first. Components are inspected before delivery.
- Step 4
Installation and finish carpentry
Our carpenters install, scribe and joint the work on site, filling and sanding for an invisible finish. Final coats and touch-ups are applied after installation. A joint walkthrough closes any punch items before we leave.

Residential Interior Millwork — Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of interior millwork do you produce?
We produce wall panelling and wainscoting, coffered and beamed ceilings, crown, base and casing runs, chair and picture rails, columns, stair parts and built-in joinery. Packages can cover a single feature room or an entire home. Everything is milled and finished to the same standard as our kitchen cabinetry.
Can you replicate original millwork in an older home?
Yes. We template existing profiles and, where needed, have custom knives ground so new work matches the original exactly. This is common in Dearborn, Grosse Pointe and Birmingham homes where the original trim is part of the property's character.
Should millwork be painted or stained?
Painted paint-grade work gives crisp, uniform detail and suits panelling and traditional trim; stained hardwood shows grain and adds warmth, and is often chosen for ceilings, studies and stair parts. We usually sample both on your actual timber before you decide.
